November Newsletter: Urban Agriculture Month

We would like to start by acknowledging the D’harawal Season we have just entered, The Time of Parra’dowee – Gooray’murrai. What a full past two months we have had, with the highlight being our very own Connecting over Fair Food + Crop Swap event! We celebrated Global Climate Change Week, shared local produce, heard about different issues in the food system, and re-connected with many of the fair food initiatives we have here in the Illawarra. November is #UrbanAgricultureMonth, a month-long celebration of growing good food in cities. Utilising the urban environment to grow fresh and local produce, from a few herbs or a flourishing backyard or community garden are all steps towards increasing food security. Keep an eye out for events happening for the occasion. Read on for:

June Newsletter: Embracing Native and Indigenous Foods

Understanding the patterns of the landscape in which we live and grow our food is crucial. In the Illawarra, we are on D’harawal land. We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians, the Wodi-Wodi People, who have lived sustainably in this landscape for thousands of years and understand the complex and interconnected cycles of weather, plants and animals.  The Food Fairness Illawarra team recently caught up with D’harawal Traditional Knowledge-holder Dr Frances Bodkin, to learn a small slice of her extensive knowledge about the seasons and cycles in our area. We are now integrating Auntie Fran’s knowledge into our regular newsletter, by highlighting one of the six D’harawal seasons in each issue. As the weather gets colder, and the days get shorter, we enter ‘Tugarah Tuli’, the time of the Burrugin(echidnas). Check out our summary of the D’harawal seasons and cylces, as well as a story on the Tugarah Tuli season, highlighting things to look out for in the landscape during the colder months.

Stanwell Park Eco Centre (SPEC), Community Garden Project

Stanwell Park Eco Centre (SPEC) was founded in June 2020 by Allison Tomazin in response to her witnessing the increasing fragility of our food supply chains. With community job insecurity and the pressures of social isolation thrown into the mix, Allison felt the need to start something that would inspire her local community to engage more with fair food practices and learn how to be self-sufficient and resilient within a sustainable food system.
