Food Aid & Rescue

These are resources that enable access to low cost and free meals to more disadvantaged members in community. These may include food banks, school breakfast programs, meal services etc. Most of these services are part of non-profit hunger relief organisations that often depend on food donations from grocery industry, local restaurants, bakeries, farmers as well as community.

The Illawarra Councils have recently published an updated ‘Low Cost and Free Meals Directory’ which is a useful resource for people in need, donors and volunteers (see Local Directory)

In the past, donating food to charity has been difficult due to complex liability laws.

Recent changes to these laws has made it easier for restaurants, caterers, food retailers, function providers and individuals to freely donate their excess food for charitable purposes.  Donated food can include fresh produce, excess prepared meals or packaged foods.

Download a Food Donation Factsheet which summarises these amendments.
