Come along to connect with other foodies and celebrate national Fair Food week, while enjoying local and ethically sourced food from The Red Kitchen and The Pines Kiama.
The theme for this years Connecting Over Fair Food is ‘Together shaping the future’ with a focus on exploring the question ‘How do we best equip the next generation to enjoy good food and create a sustainable food future?
There will be a fantastic panel of speakers (see below), as well as a range of expo stalls and the oppertunity to contribute to the Fair Food poster wall.
This event is organised by Food Fairness Illawarra, with support from Shellharbour, Wollongong and Kiama Councils, NSW Health and Healthy Cities Illawarra as part of National Fair Food week.
Connecting over Fair Food takes a “Pay As You Feel” approach with a sliding scale starting at $10. Amelia Berner is OzHarvest’s Food Education and Sustainability Training (FEAST) Program Manager, which combines nutrition, food waste and sustainability in a curriculum ready package for Australian schools. Amelia’s passion for nutrition and environmental education stems from a decade of experienceas a Food Technology teacher and working as a practicing nutritionist, which enabled her to develop the FEAST education program that ensures all children has the ability to learn how to cook in a classroom setting.

Aaron Sorenson is a Permaculture practitioner, teacher and designer who has been working with community gardens and school Permaculture gardens over the past 20 years, and was recently named the 2018 PIP Permie of the Year for his amazing contributions. He is passionate about inspiring transformative change in his local Illawarra community by connecting people with nature and creating resilient urban food systems. Aaron works with Dan Deighton as Elemental Permaculture.

Jenny Norman is a dietitian currently working in a research role with the Health Promotion Service. Jenny has recently submitted her PhD where she investigated the effects of unhealthy food advertising on children’s dietary intake.

Marie Armstrong Smith is a teacher and writer with a strong interest in environmental education for young children. Her early childhood service Early Years Care provides educative learning on sustainability including -food programs, Little Diggers Play school at the Barrack Heights community garden, eco smart training for educators and recycled creative arts.

Rosi Johnston works for ISLHD Health Promotion Service supporting early childhood centres, primary and high schools with healthy eating and physical activity strategies with a focus on implementing the NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy.

Berbel Franse is a Health Promotion Officer in Food Security & Food Sustainability at Healthy Cities Illawarra, the Secretariat of Food Fairness Illawarra and founder of homegrown food waste initiative Hidden Harvest. Her passion to tackle some our current food systems issues, started while living in Ghana (West –Africa) and now enables Berbel to combine her supply chain management expertise and natural interest (+Masters) in sustainability.

Quote from last years’ Connecting Over fair Food week event in Kiama, which was attended by 160 people:
“I liked the bringing together of passionate community members and groups. The range of speakers demonstrated the breadth of action that is happening in this area in our region. The expo stalls also demonstrated this and were set up in a good way that allowed you to easily circulate and speak to people. Of course, the food was delicious too!”
This event will be held in the Shellharbour Civic Centre auditorium, 76 Cygnet Avenue, Shellharbour City Centre. There is free, untimed carparking available in the Civic Centre carpark (please be aware some car spaces are marked as limited time parking). Entry to the carpark closes at 8pm, however cars can exit the carpark after this time.
