SUMMARY:Composting and Worm Farming
DESCRIPTION:Organised by Green Connect (https://green-connect.com.au/where-we-are/)\n\n\n\n\nIn this 2.5 hour masterclass\, you’ll discover the magic of turning your household kitchen waste into rich\, fertile soil to grow thriving plants in\, through composting techniques and worm farming.\n\nJoin Rod Logan\, Market Garden Coordinator here at the award-winning Green Connect Farm\, who will guide you through the steps and share all his tips and tricks. \nCompost is often called ‘black gold’ for its ability to replenish nutrients in the garden\, retain precious moisture\, prevent erosion\, loosen clay and compacted soil to improve drainage and suppress unwanted weeds. \nWorm castings are an exceptional fertiliser\, and extremely easy to obtain using a ‘worm farm’ that can be set up almost anywhere\, requiring very little space. \nComposting and worm farming are easy once you understand the processes at work. Rod will demystify the hows and whys\, giving you and your household the skills to close the loop on food waste\, without a costly set up or a big investment of time! \nIn this masterclass\, Rod will explain and demonstrate: \n\nWhat to think about when setting up a home composting system\, including the structure and the inputs.\nHow to get a successful hot compost every time\, with beautiful garden soil as the output.\nHow composting works on a large scale here at the Green Connect Farm.\nThe ins and outs of worm farming (let the worms do the work of breaking down food scraps and creating a rich organic fertiliser\, their worm castings!)\n\nIf you’d like to see your plants flourishing in your very own\, home-made compost or worm castings\, then this workshop is for you! By the end of this workshop\, you will be able to select the appropriate type of composting system or worm farm for your needs\, understand the basics of how and why this system works and apply the finished results to your plants. \nIncluded: \n\nA tour of the composting system at Green Connect’s award winning urban permaculture farm.\n\nBefore you book your ticket\, please consider the following: \n\nPlants love rain and so do we! We don’t cancel workshops because of rain – we will only cancel if there is a severe storm forecast. Please come prepared for the weather conditions.\nThe site is a working farm – all visitors will be given a brief safety induction upon arrival.\nThe terrain at the farm is steep and can be slippery in parts. Though the workshop will take place primarily within our accessible education hub\, there is a possibility that participants will be required to walk across uneven or sloping ground. If you have mobility restrictions or any concerns about your ability to navigate the terrain\, please contact us before booking.\nAllergen advice: Our farm is home to domestic animals as well as bees\, wasps\, and macadamia trees. Please pack an EpiPen if allergic and keep it with you while on site.\n\nAll workshop participants must: \n\nWear enclosed shoes or boots (no thongs or sandals) and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Long pants are recommended.\nBring a hat and sunscreen or raincoat\, depending on the weather forecast.\nBring a pen/pencil and paper if you wish to take notes.\nBring a refillable water bottle.\n\n“While FFI takes every reasonable effort to ensure that information is correct at the time of publication\, we recommend that the individual confirm details with the event organiser\, as events can be subject to last minute changes.”
