SUMMARY:No-dig\, small space gardening
DESCRIPTION:Organised by Green Connect (https://green-connect.com.au/where-we-are/) \nWould you like to learn the practical skills to set up a productive garden space\, almost anywhere plants can access light and grow? \nJoin expert horticulturalist Narelle Happ for this 3.5 hour immersive workshop\, where participants will learn through hands-on doing how to design\, set up and plant out a small garden space for a balcony\, a concrete pad\, or in a backyard. \nTogether\, we will create four different types of garden structure using repurposed\, easy to obtain materials. Setting up a food garden doesn’t need to be expensive if we use our creativity and the items available to us. These garden structures can be set up quickly and transported to different sites – perfect for people who are renting or new to gardening. \nThese four structures combined will set up a huge range of different conditions in your garden\, enabling you to grow a variety of different crops throughout the seasons. \nHowever small or large your space\, the skills you learn in this workshop will set you up to be a successful gardener and empower you to start growing your own food straight away. \nWorkshop participants will help to create: \n\nRaised garden beds using a no-dig\, layering method – perfect for growing all your annual vegetables.\nA herb spiral – creates microclimates for different herbs which like different growing conditions.\nA wicking bed – keeps a moist environment for plants which like to keep their feet wet\, such as taro\, water cress and hot mint.\nA container garden for a fruiting tree – grow your own olive tree or citrus in a pot.\n\nIncluded: \n\nMorning tea.\nDetailed course notes.\n\nBefore you book your ticket\, please consider the following: \n\nThe site is a working farm – all visitors will be given a brief safety induction upon arrival.\nThe terrain at the farm is steep and can be slippery in parts. Though the workshop will take place primarily within our accessible education hub\, there is a possibility that participants will be required to walk across uneven or sloping ground. If you have mobility restrictions or any concerns about your ability to navigate the terrain\, please contact us before booking.\nAllergen advice: Our farm is home to domestic animals as well as bees\, wasps\, and macadamia trees. Please pack an EpiPen if allergic and keep it with you while on site.\n\nAll workshop participants must: \n\nWear enclosed shoes or boots (no thongs or sandals) and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Long pants are recommended.\nBring gardening gloves\, if you have them.\nBring a hat and sunscreen or raincoat\, depending on the weather forecast.\nBring a pen/pencil and paper if you wish to take notes.\nBring a refillable water bottle.\n\n  \n“While FFI takes every reasonable effort to ensure that information is correct at the time of publication\, we recommend that the individual confirm details with the event organiser\, as events can be subject to last minute changes.”
