Beekeeping with Kids
Involving kids in keeping bees is a rewarding way for them get a deeper understanding of bees and the natural world, spend time outdoors, and learn the basics of managing a hive. All while enjoying the honey make by the bees.
Bees are a crucial in maintaining a diverse and resilient ecosystems, however, colony numbers are declining. Installing a hive will benefit your veggie patch and surrounding area, whilst fighting the declining colony numbers.
It is important to teach kids about beekeeping safety and only introduce them to age-appropriate elements of beekeeping.
You can bring pollinators to your patch even without a beehive – building a back yard “bee hotel” is a great alternative, providing a safe nesting place for native bees and other insects.
