Composting with Kids

Composting is a great solution to deal with food scraps in the home and highlights the importance of returning resources back to the earth. Watching and participating in this part of the food cycle can be both fun and educational for kids.

Getting started is easy and there are a variety of affordable composting solutions to suit different households. For those without the space, worm farms or community garden shared composts are a great solution.

Getting the kids involved

  • Explain why they should compost.
  • Make sure your kids know what can and can’t be composted. For younger kids, print out pictures of what can and can’t be included in compost
  • Make it part of your daily household routine. You may want to have a small kitchen compost bin that the kids can put their scraps straight into. When the bin is full then they can partake in throwing this in the outside pile or bin.
