Are you a food rescue or relief organisation?

We've created some helpful resources and tools for you.

Increase collaboration and network with the local sector, understand how to obtain rescued food for your organisation, and get in touch with Illawarra food businesses for potential food donations.

Food Relief & Rescue Working Group

Food Fairness Illawarra hosts bi-monthly meetings to bring together stakeholders from the food relief and rescue sector.

These meetings foster collaboration, share knowledge, and coordinate efforts to address food insecurity. Meetings are mostly held online so are easy to join, with two in-person sessions throughout the year to bring the sector together.

To join the group, email foodfairness@healthycities.org.au

“It’s wonderful to have an open forum to speak about the challenges, trends and wins we are all having.” Olivia Penner-Dilworth, OzHarvest

The Illawarra Food Donations WhatsApp Group

To support your vital work, we’ve created the Illawarra Food Donations WhatsApp group, a simple tool to strengthen the connection between hospitality/food retail businesses and you, our local food relief sector.

Here’s how the group works:

  • Local businesses post surplus food opportunities.
  • If you’re interested, you respond to coordinate collection/drop-off.
  • No limit on how many people from your organisation can join.
  • Fantastic way to score additional ad-hoc rescued food for community meals or grocery bags.

See you in there!

Food Rescue in the Illawarra

The Illawarra has two of Australia’s national food rescuers operating in the area, OzHarvest and SecondBite. If you work with or operate a food relief service and are not already receiving rescued food from either, you can apply for rescued food drop-offs and collections with both at the same time!

SecondBite — send an enquiry email: hannah.olsen@secondbite.org.au

The Illawarra Food Rescue & Relief Project

Our Illawarra Food Rescue & Relief project works to reduce food waste and redivert it to food relief across our region.

Funded by the NSW Environment Protection Authority until May 2027, the project brings together local food rescue and food relief organisations to strengthen collaboration, connect food businesses with donation pathways, and increase the amount of surplus edible food redirected to people in need instead of landfill.

We work alongside our official project partners and the wider sector to support a more coordinated and effective food relief system for the Illawarra.
